Waxing has been around long enough that you’d think we’d have cleared a few things up by now.
And yet.
We still hear some version of the same things in the treatment room: I shaved, but just once.I thought I had to grow it out longer.I’m on my period, so I almost canceled.
Some waxing advice is outdated. Some is misunderstood. And some has simply been passed from friend to friend for so long that nobody remembers where it came from.
So, let’s clear a few things up.
MYTH: “I shaved just once. It won’t make a difference.”
We know how “just once” happens.
Your wax appointment is still a week away. The hair is starting to bother you. The razor is right there.
What could it hurt?
The issue isn’t that you've somehow ruined your waxing results forever. You haven't.
But shaving cuts the hair at the surface while waxing removes it from the root. When you shave between appointments, you interrupt the waxing rhythm we’re trying to establish and introduce hairs at different stages of growth.
If you've decided waxing is your preferred method of hair removal, give it a chance to actually be your method of hair removal.
Step away from the razor.
MYTH: “I need to grow my hair out forever before I can wax.”
Please don't disappear for three months because you think we need Rapunzel-level growth to perform a Brazilian.
We need enough hair for the wax to grip effectively. We do not need a personal history of every hair you've grown since your last appointment.
If you've been shaving, allow an appropriate amount of growth (as long as a grain of rice or 3 weeks) before your appointment. If you've been waxing consistently, stay on your recommended schedule.
Not sure if it's long enough?
Ask us before reaching for the razor.
MYTH: “I can't get waxed on my period.”
More hair does not automatically equal a better wax.
Consistency matters.
When you maintain a regular waxing schedule, we're able to work with your hair growth more predictably. Waiting significantly longer than recommended doesn't earn you extra credit.
And if you're repeatedly waiting until you absolutely cannot stand the hair anymore, we're probably not on a maintenance schedule.
We're in a cycle of emergency hair removal. Make it easier on yourself and your waxer.
MYTH: “I can't get waxed on my period.”
You can.
For intimate waxing, you'll need to wear a tampon, cup or disc during your appointment. You may also find that you're a little more sensitive at certain points in your cycle, so keep that in mind when scheduling.
But your period itself doesn't automatically mean you have to cancel your wax.
MYTH: “The longer I wait between waxes, the better.”
Maybe.
Or maybe you're already doing too much.
Exfoliation is an important part of good waxing aftercare because it helps keep dead skin from building up around emerging hairs.
But more isn't always better.
Over-exfoliating can leave skin irritated, and your routine also needs to account for hydration, friction, picking and what you're doing immediately after your wax.
We wrote an entire article about this one because your Luv Scrub deserves some backup.

MYTH: “Eventually waxing will make me completely hairless.”
We would not plan your retirement from body hair just yet.
With consistent waxing, some people notice changes in how their hair appears or grows over time. But waxing is still a hair-removal service—not permanent hair removal.
If completely permanent removal is your goal, that's a different conversation and a different type of service.
MYTH: “I should wait until the day before vacation to wax.”
We'd rather you didn't.
Especially if it's your first wax.
Freshly waxed skin deserves a little consideration before you introduce it to sun, heat, pools, ocean water, intense workouts and friction.
If you know how your skin normally responds to waxing, plan accordingly. If you're new to waxing, give yourself even more breathing room.
Your first Brazilian and your flight to Aruba do not need to be scheduled six hours apart…Try at least 48 hours instead.
A good waxing routine is actually pretty uneventful.
Wax consistently.
Don't shave between appointments.
Follow your aftercare.
Tell us when your skincare or medications change.
And ask us when you're unsure instead of taking advice from somebody's cousin who waxed twice in 2019.
We'll take it from there.
